What makes our pre-college summer programs for high school students program special is the combination of immersion and cross-learning merged with fun and friendship that permeates everything we do.
Students thrive when presented with cool seminars. That’s why we have seminars throughout the week, offered by our program staff as well as the University’s faculty. This is a great way to learn all about new and interesting topics, plus some very important issues that face each of our students. Our pre-college summer programs for high school students is a great way to get to have a College experience while at the same time learning new things and making new friends! Join us! UNIVERSITY ADMISSIONS SEMINAR:
The point of this seminar is to de-mystify, simplify and prepare for the entire upcoming admissions process for each student. Students will meet with members of our Admissions office. We will conduct mock interviews as well as work on specific entrance essays. We will discuss extra-curricular work, Advance Placement courses and much more. Whether students choose to apply to SAU or to other schools, this seminar is designed to give students a leg up on the process. Students will create their own personalized binder, identifying first the type of school they may be interested in attending: public or private? Big or small? Close to or far from home? Each student’s unique and personalized binder will be organized and maintained by the students themselves with help from the Admissions Office. This binder will contain a personalized plan and chart for the intervening years between this summer and their freshman year. So whether a student is a rising senior (with a unique set of challenges and facing short deadlines) or a rising freshman (with more time to work on their application and extra-curriculars), students will be energized and engaged in the application process.
Led by members of the Admissions Office.
IMMERSION: Learning by Doing
Our courses are designed to be immersive and exciting. We do not have long, boring lectures where teachers stand at the front and drone on and on while students sit bored and sleepy. Oh no! That’s what other academic programs do because its easier and cheaper to have lots and lots of students for every teacher.
Our courses are hands-on. That means that when we are learning, we are working with our hands, we are actually doing something! And we are having fun at the same time. From our vet science kids working with and handling real, live animals, to our forensic science kids investigating mock crime scenes, to our writers reading and writing in poetry slams and coffee-house performances, we learn by doing. And no, you won’t be required to stand up in front of everyone and read your work if you don’t want to… but we create a space in which it is so fun, and non-judgemental, that even the most shy student will likely feel emboldened enough to jump up and give it a try!
