Modern crime shows often feature forensic science. How real are the shows? Our forensic science summer camp class will look at the way the entertainment industry portrays crime scenes and detection, and then learn what the true forensic scientist does.
Our forensic science summer camp class will focus on the history of forensic science, proper investigatory techniques, crime scene analysis and case studies. We will hold class in a college lab, which will enable us to perform experiments and study outcomes. We will work on fluid analysis, spatter analysis, decomposition rates and much more. The course will culminate in the study of one or more crime scenes. Our students will examine a crime scene and will use their new skills to interpret and solve the case. They will collect evidence, look for fingerprints and other organic clues, take photographs, study the location and disposition of evidence, and interview suspects. The course promises to be a fun and educational experience for the budding crime solver.
One of our favorite activities each summer is to discuss famous cases of the day and how forensic science was used in the investigations and in the court room. There is seemingly a never-ending flow of amazing cases where the forensic science presented in court has led to conviction after conviction. In some cases the only evidence presented is forensic. This makes for a very lively discussion in class at our forensic science summer camp. What if mistakes were made? What if evidence was lost, damaged, or simply misinterpreted? Can forensic scientists be duped, tricked, misled into false conclusions? Our discussions range from small local cases to larger national cases over the past decade.
